Volunteering at the Jack Johnson show

Last night I volunteered to help people register to vote through Kanu Hawaii at the Jack Johnson show. I got nine people [including myself] registered to vote.

Getting my hands dirty at the grassroots level felt great. I probably talked to around 100 people at the show who ranged from drunken partyboys to civic leaders.

Two conversations I had stuck out to me.

The first was a woman and her daughter, a student at HPU. Mom was out visiting and had just been talking with her daughter earlier in the day about the importance of voting. It gave us a chance to chat for a few minutes about the process, and the issues she cared about. To see Mom’s face when her daughter handed me a completed voter form was pretty awesome.

The second person I met that left an impact was a man with a family in Ewa. He’d moved from Cali 6 years ago and was still registered to vote there. When we started chatting, I asked him what were the issues he cared about. For him it was simple: rail and schools.

His daughter had been attending one of the lowest performing schools in the state, and they recently moved to Ewa to get her into a better district. He was amazed/pissed that we were spending $6 billion on “a f*&%ing tram that doesn’t stop in towns where people actually live” when we have huge problems with our public education.

He’d never made the connection that Rail is a political issue and registering to vote can make an impact. Talking this through with him made me really proud to take part in the civic process.

Even though it was a rewarding night, approaching 100 people is incredibly draining and hard for me. It’s a skill that I’m not good at and something I’m going to have to practice if I keep going.

Oh, … and the amazing Kokua Foundation got all the Kanu volunteers into Jack’s show - with amazing ground level seats for free! Jack + Paula Fuga + John Cruz acoustic set was one of the best nights of music in my life. thanks!
